Juvenile white squirrel spotted in Alabama

Wanda Hicks sent in these photos of a young white squirrel in her backyard.

Wanda says:

I live in central Alabama in a little town called Slapout, AL. We live in the country and spotted a white squirrel once last year and again this year, not the same squirrel, this one was much smaller than the former one. I was able to get up close and get some wonderful pictures. It had the pink albino eyes and was just beautiful. […] It was unafraid of me and I was able to get very close to it. We have pecan trees and he kept jumping off the fence to get more pecans.

Let’s catch up with chippy the chipmunk

Last time we had Chippy on this site he was sleeping in his owner’s hair.

What is he doing now?

Yup, still sleeping…

This other video shows that Chippy actually does spend some time awake once in a while.

My favorite part is where he is watching Animal Planet with ‘Gramps.’

Cute things squirrels do: the nosetouch

When you feed a squirrel, even if it is really tame, it will usually carry the nut farther away to eat it.

Keep feeding the same squirrel enough times and it will become satiated and start to carry the nuts away to bury them instead.

If you give a squirrel more nuts than it can carry at a single time, then of course, it will be forced to leave the rest behind and come back for them later.

If you do this you will notice that all squirrels will touch each of the remaining nuts with their nose one by one before leaving.

It almost seems as if they need to touch it with their nose to fix it in their minds.

When squirrels move on

When you get to know your local squirrels it’s always a bit sad when one of them is suddenly gone.

The reasons are many: they get killed by cars, die from diseases, or simply move on and are never seen again.

Let’s not get carried away. A squirrel going missing isn’t among the biggest problems in life, but like a lot of things that make life enjoyable, you don’t realize how much you appreciate something till it’s gone.

It’s comforting when the same squirrels show up every day and it’s nice to see them grow up and to watch their coats adapt to the seasons.

The New York Squirrel follows a squirrel called ‘Patches’ that went missing and was found again in July, then seemed to disappear for good this fall.

Maybe it has something to do with the big wound he has on his back that doesn’t seem to ever heal.

Sorry about Patches, but it looks like there’s a new crop of babies out and about in NYC right now.

I’m almost sure I heard one yesterday as well.

Rally squirrel in inspirational video

Fans are embracing the so called ‘rally squirrel’ who has made several appearances on the field at Busch Stadium, some say giving a boost to the Cardinals each time it shows up.

The squirrel is even featured in the latest commercial in Major League Baseball’s “Legends are Born in October” series, set to inspirational music.

I’m not sure I like the bit where a player chases him with a broom, but otherwise pretty cute.

The Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in St. Lois raised $210,000 so far from the sale of T-Shirts featuring the squirrel.
