Mother Squirrel Retrieving Babies

Here’s a cute video of a mother squirrel retrieving her babies after they fell out of the nest.

The squirrels were cold when they were found, so the people who found them put them in a cardboard box with a heat source. Once they were warmed up they put the cardboard box near the tree where they fell so the mother could retrieve them.

Are you paying attention kids? This is pretty much exactly the right thing to do.

Baby squirrel at the beach

I ran into this baby squirrel at the beach the other day.

Some people there said that it had crashed their picnic and spent the afternoon with them. A couple of kids were handling it as well.

I became concerned that it was getting to familiar with people and also that its mother might be nearby, but too afraid to approach her baby. There are also plenty of unleashed dogs running around near the beach as well.

I tried putting it in a tree, but it wouldn’t stay up there, and would climb down and approach people as soon as it saw movement.

One of the kids said that he first spotted it near the tennis courts. I decided to take it and put it in some bushes near there thinking it might stay put and stop following people around if it couldn’t see them.

It’s one of those cases where you hope you did the right thing. I definitely wondered what happened to that baby squirrel as I was falling asleep that night.

Squirrel gathers nesting material

Here is a video of one of our neighbourhood squirrels gathering dry grass to make a nest.

She made several runs like this over a period of about half an hour, following the same long route to her nest each time.

A Squirrel with no tail: curtailed!

Did you know that the origin of the word ‘curtail’ is likely the Middle French word ‘courtault,’ which means an animal with a docked tail?

Even though this squirrel was curtailed, it didn’t stop it from enjoying a nice day at the beach.

Squirrels with no tail look a bit like a rabbit or a guinea pig don’t they?
