The other white tailed squirrel

Just to the south-west of our place seems to be the territory of the white tailed squirrels.

In an earlier post we thought there was only one, but it’s looking like there are several of them.

This would explain why we believed that that one squirrel had an unusually large territory. We may simply have been spotting several different white tailed squirrels over a large area.

Here’s a picture of one of them. This one is definitely smaller and younger than the squirrel in the other post.

Young white tailed squirrel.

Squirrels ‘Lucy’ and ‘Inky’ playing

In a previous post we showed a picture of Lucy and her juvenile offspring Inky snuggling together on the fence and mentioned that they sometimes like to play and groom each other as well.

Well, we finally managed to get a useable video of them doing that, viz:

These playful antics went on for some little time, until a cat arrived and distracted Inky from the game.

Helping squirrels cool off in the summer heat

We are going though a stultifying heat wave here and the squirrels are feeling it too.

Here’s what happened when we tried misting squirrels so they can cool off. They seem to like it.

Hot enough for ya squirrel?

It was 37°C today (99F) and the squirrels are totally zonked out.

Right after I took this picture I sprayed the leaves above him with the hose to help him cool off.
