Scott and Willy High Park squirrels 2

"We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." - Immanuel Kant

A while back we posted a story about Scott and Willy going out on a squirrel feeding expedition in Toronto's High Park.

Scott just sent me some close up pictures from that outing, and I'm pleased to get the pictures, but I'm even more pleased to get the chance to write a better article this time.

What I really should have said in my last post is how cool it is that an ex-soldier and ten year old Willy can go out and, without self consciousness or 'irony', feed cute and fuzzy creatures in a park.

I could rhapsodize further about how cool it is that Willy is ten, and how I remember how awesome it was the summer I was ten (Was there only one summer when I was ten? It must have been a long one then...)

Willy is on a road trip with his mom right now and Scott is caring for 7 cats.

Gallery: A chipmunk and a red squirrel

Just a quick post to put up some pictures of a red squirrel and a chipmunk taken in Eastern Ontario.

These two species of squirrel (Yes, chipmunks are a kind of squirrel) require a more specific habitat than the Eastern Grey squirrels that visit us here at the nutsaboutsquirrels headquarters.

While we love our local squirrels, it’s always nice to switch things up once in a while. Can’t take pictures of the same old squirrels all the time.

Here’s a photo gallery. (You can click on the pictures to enlarge them)

Local squirrel ‘White Belly’ found dead in road

One of our local squirrels White Belly was killed by a car today.

It rained this morning and her body was lying on the wet pavement. She looked normal, except there was a bit of blood pooled near her mouth.

When I picked her up with a shovel her body rolled over revealing the white stripe on her stomach.

When you get to know these animals like we do, when they are no longer just “a squirrel” but an individual whose personality and life history is known to you and tied to you in a small way, the task of picking them up off the pavement is made more difficult.

This is the small risk we take in getting to know them.

They take much larger risks just being urban squirrels, raising their families in the city, and having to cross roads in front of cars that rarely slow down to let them pass.

She had a nice personality. We would often see her lazing around in our backyard stretched out flat on the fence and dozing in the sun.

If we happened to be in the yard when she was lounging around like this, she’d suddenly spot us with a look that seemed to mean: “Oh hi! I didn’t see you there!,” and go right on laying there while we walked by only a few feet away.

Here is one of the last photos we have of her.

A portrait of the squirrel as a young…squirrel

Piggy, who was born into a hard winter last fall, is really growing up.

He must really be enjoying the summer. Until the warm weather finally came winter was all he knew.
