Brevard white squirrel safari

White squirrel looking cute (chest clasp!) in Brevard, N.C. ©John Woestendiek ohmidog.com. Used with permission. The folks at ohmidog.com posted this article on a group of old friends heading out on safari to find the legendary white squirrels of Brevard, N.C. (See the article for more photos of the squirrel pictured here.)

Apparently, about one in four of the squirrels in Brevard is white. They are not albino squirrels as you can see from this squirrel here which has patches of grey in its coat.

There are various theories, more like legends really, on the origin of the squirrels, but no matter where they came from Brevard has embraced them, even going so far as to enact an ordinance declaring the town a sanctuary for all members of the family Sciuridae but especially the white squirrels.

Brevard also hosts an annual music and arts festival named the “White Squirrel Festival” which is expected to draw 25,000 people this year.

Although dogs often chase squirrels, and despite that I even know someone who owns a dog that has killed several squirrels (Yeah, I’m talking about you “Scout” the dog!) we at nutsaboutsquirrels have no beef with dogs and we highly encourage you to check out ohmidog.com.

Fizzle the squirrel runs in hamster ball

The Modesto Bee of Modesto, Calif., published a story Thursday on the Stanislaus care centre for injured wildlife’s annual Baby Shower.

They have a video featuring a baby heron, a baby raccoon, but best of all a California ground squirrel running in a hamster ball (Actually it’s a ball made for ferrets, the largest available, because she is much larger than a hamster.)

The squirrel, named Fizzle, is the only survivor from her litter that was brought in cold and sick two or three years ago.

She required so much treatment to save her life that she became too tame for release. Now she gets to live at the centre as an education animal.

Her illness stunted her growth, but the upshot is that she is small enough to use a hamster ball.

So if you are in the area and you drop in on Saturday May 21 you might get to meet Fizzle. Of course no matter where you live, you can make a donation online to support the centre’s work.

Here is a picture of Fizzle in her nesting box. The photo was taken during the winter when according to Executive Director Donna Burt “she gets very fat and sleeps a lot.” (You and me both, little squirrel.)

Squirrel stuck in soda machine

A wildlife rescuer demonstrates a new weapon: 'The Squirrel Canon.'
Pictures are screen shots from the television broadcast segment linked below ©WFMZ-TV

WFMZ-TV of Allentown, Pa., has a video on its website about a squirrel, nicknamed Sprite, getting stuck in a vending machine in the town of Bethlehem.

After it was noticed that the squirrel was inside, signs were put on the Coke machine saying: “Do not use! Animal inside! Do not use!!” and wildlife rescue experts were called in.

It took the wildlife volunteers a few hours to extract the squirrel from the vending machine. He was later released. (Boy did he ever run like hell when they opened that cat carrier they had him in!)

Judging from the squeaking when they caught him, he is probably a juvenile squirrel.

Baby squirrel explores yard

This little guy showed up yesterday.

Or, I should say these little guys, there are two of these baby squirrels and they look almost identical.

Baby squirrel testing to see if grass seed is edible. Yup, it is...
We spotted them yesterday exploring the yard, playing in the grass under the bird bath, testing everything to see what is edible.

They are a bit skittish but if you stay still their curiosity will bring them out.

Squirrel spring collection 2011

It’s spring, and all our squirrels are losing their winter coats in favour of a sleeker spring look.

Some squirrels moult evenly. Others moult from head to toe, leaving them with short fur on top, and thick fur from the waist down—they look like they are wearing ski pants.

All of them also lose the extra tufts of fur that protect their ears. This is most noticeable in the grey squirrels, because for them the ear tufts are white, making them clearly visible against the base coat.

Some like Sasquatch look better.

Sasquatch sports his spring coat. The white eartips are gone and his fur is more brown than grey.

While other squirrels, don’t look so good. For example it’s hard to believe this Gollum looking squirrel is Lucy.
