Local squirrels freaked out by arrival of new cat

This new marmalade cat started showing up about a week ago, and every time I’ve seen him he has always been lying in the same sunny spot in the neighbour’s yard.

He’s very shy and won’t let you approach, but he seems agreeable enough. If you talk nice to him he’ll do “nice eyes,” to show you he likes it. I guess he’s just an older cat looking to lie in the sun and not bother anyone.

The squirrels don’t like him at all though, and every time they notice him one of them will start making an alarm call. Sometimes others will join in until the yard is a chorus of agitated squirrels flicking their tails and scolding. This can go on for 10 minutes.

The cat doesn’t care and goes on lying there, and eventually the squirrels go back to what they were doing.

There are plenty of other cats in the neighbourhood, but the squirrels don’t seem to mind them if they are familiar cats.

For example the other neighbours have a cat, pictured here, and they can feed the squirrels on their porch with Socks lying a few feet away .

One time, a squirrel even jumped onto and over the cat, when he was in the way of a treat it wanted to retrieve.

This isn’t the first time we have noticed this. We had a cat at the house for a few months, and I remember when it got out that the squirrels went nuts then too.

It looks as though squirrels can recognize individual cats. Maybe they can even tell individual humans apart.

Bear shows up with grey baby in tow

Bear the squirrel came running down the fence all excited for her pile of sunflower seeds this morning, as usual, except this time she brought company.

This little guy (girl?) was following her along the fence, probably eager to find out where mom has been spending her time all day.

Naturally we went out to try to get a picture, but the baby got spooked and ran up the side of the neighbour’s house, so this is the best we could get.

This is the first spring baby we have seen this year, and judging by how huge all the momma squirrels have been, there’s sure to be a lot more where he came from too!

It’s so windy today

There are 50km/hr winds and the squirrels are getting windblown like crazy!

Take a look at this photo of Sasquatch for instance.

Even the fuzzy tips on her ears are all windswept. Eartips—enhance!

Sasquatch and Piggy playing

The pictures aren't great, but you can see how playful these two are. They both live in the squirrelhouse and as we've mentioned before, part of their morning routine involves roughhousing like this. This typically involves mock attacks, chasing and, ahem, dry humping each other... Click on the photos to enlarge them.

A peek inside a squirrel nursery

8/22/09 - Sleeping and nursing (32 days old) ©2011 The Squirrel In Our Window—used with permission.

An eastern grey squirrel built a nest up against the apartment window of Kenneth Feldman and Michelle Dortignac in Brooklyn, N.Y. allowing them to take stunning close up photos of her raising three litters of pups.

In this photo she is lying on her back and nursing her babies at 32 days of age.

They have many more pictures documenting the babies as they progress from little pink hairless things to fully furred mini adults.
